Mint Stats: Eagle Buyers Scramble as '09 Nears End
By David C. Harper, Numismatic News December 23, 2009 |

The scramble for 2009 fractional gold American Eagle half-ounce and quarter-ounce bullion coins ended Dec. 18, just before a blizzard socked Washington, D.C., and much of the East Coast. Last week’s column reported what this week’s potential numbers might be, but the forecast was just a little low. The final half-ounce total was 110,000 coins. The final quarter ounce number was identical. The tenth ounce had sold out earlier at 270,000.
The one-ounce gold American Eagle is still being sold. Its December sales number is 62,500 coins. Silver American Eagle numbers jumped by 704,500 pieces. The 2009 coins will be offered until the Mint runs out. That could be before New Year’s or even after. One thing is certain. Orders for 2010 silver American Eagles will be taken from authorized purchasers starting Jan. 19.
The Lincoln proof set seems to have sold out at 201,107.
