The Royal Mint honored the Prince of Wales July 31 with the presentation of a special gold edition of a medal struck to commemorate the golden anniversary of the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards (the Welsh Cavalry), who have been serving in Afghanistan.

Prince Charles is colonel-in-chief of the 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards, but his personal affinity with the regiment goes bac k further. His predecessor as colonel-in-chief was his grandmother, the late Queen Elizabeth.

The medal, engraved with the regimental motto “Pro Rege et Patria” (For Queen and Country) was presented to Prince Charles at a special event at Cardiff Castle marking the 50th anniversary of the regiment. The prince carried out an inspection of the regiment, which then marched through the center of Cardiff. The parade ended with the regiment saluting the prince on its return to the castle.

Standard editions of the medal were awarded to the entire regiment.

Visitors to Cardiff Castle have the opportunity to purchase the medal, housed in a presentation case, on site.
