Gettysburg Bill Calls for Three Coins
By David L. Ganz, Numismatic News
October 15, 2009

Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address of Nov. 19, 1863, would be honored with a three-coin commemorative set under the terms of new legislation.

Introduced Oct. 1 by Rep. Todd R. Platts, R-Pa., with 24 co-sponsors, H.R. 3712 calls for a $5 gold piece, silver dollar and copper-nickel half dollar.

Designs on each “shall be emblematic of the history and memory of the Gettysburg campaign and President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.”

Up to 100,000 gold coins ($35 surcharge) 500,000 silver dollars ($10) and 750,000 halves ($5) could be produced. The surcharges are designed to raise funds for the Gettysburg Foundation and the Army Heritage Center Foundation.
