Hawaii Notes Star in Joint Auction

1882 $5 National Bank Note

Described as "a very pretty Value Back Five with boardwalk margins and outstanding eye appeal," an 1882 $5 National Bank Note, Fr. 574, KL 1138, from the First National Bank of Hawaii, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, in PCGS Very Fine 35 was auctioned for $54,280. The rarity was sold on Sept. 7 as part of the Stack's Rare Coins of New York and Ira and Larry Goldberg's Coins & Collectibles, Inc., Beverly Hills, Calif., sale of the "The 9/09 Hawaii Collection of Coins and Currency."

All prices include a 15 percent buyer's fee.

Bringing $41,400 was a unique complete scrip uncut sheet from the Lahainaluna Seminary, Lahainaluna, Hawaii, ca. 1843.

Another top scrip lot was one of only three known (undated) Ladd & Co. $5 Kala Elma notes from the Koloa Plantation. It brought $24,150. The Koloa Plantation was the first commercial sugar plantation in Hawaii.

An undated (1880) Republic of Hawaii $10 Silver Certificate of Deposit, P-7a, in PCGS Fine 12, sold for $14,375. Bearing Ashley-Damon signatures, it was one of only two uncancelled $10 Series C notes known.

l 1934-A $10 Hawaii Emergency Silver Certificate, PCGS Superb Gem New 68 PPQ, $7,187.50.
l 1882 Date Back $10 National Bank Note, First National Bank of Hawaii, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, PCGS Extremely Fine 40, Fr-545. KL-1205, $6,900.
l 1882 Brown Back $20 First National Bank of Hawaii, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii, Fr. 504, KL 1269, PCGS Very Fine 20, $6,000.
l Uncut sheet of 12 1935-A $1 Hawaii Emergency Silver Certificates, PCGS New 65 PPQ, $13,225. One of only 25 uncut sheets printed and released.
l 1934-A $5 Hawaii Emergency Silver Certificates, five consecutive notes (PCGS Superb Gem New/Gem New 67PPQ, 66PPQ, 67PPQ, 66PPQ, 66PPQ), Fr-2302, KL 1961, $8,337.50.
l 1934/1934-A $20 Hawaii Emergency Silver Certificate, unique foward changeover pair changeover pair, PMG About Uncirculated 53EPQ, Fr. 2304, KL 2523, $6,900.
