Series 1905 "Technicolor" $20 Gold Certificate

Bringing $47,000 was a Series 1905 "Technicolor" $20 Gold Certificate, Fr. 1170, Serial No. A404312, as part of Spink Smythe's "The Collector's Series" sale, Jan. 15-17, in New York.

Graded PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ, the note was described as "One of the most desirable types not only because of it relative scarcity in any grade, but even more so because of the beautiful array of colors used in its printing."

The note came from a small hoard of 25 notes owned by William Philpott, who purchased them from a friend at the Treasury Department. "While not all consecutive, all notes did come from the same pack and are identifiable by the prefix A4043___.," according to the lot description. "The last example that sold at public auction happened to be the sister note to the present example with serial number of A404311, and was graded by PCGS as a 67 PPQ and realized $132,250."

Prices here do not include a 20 percent buyer's premium. The hammer total for the sale, which also featured coins, stocks and bonds, and autographs, was $685,910.

Selling for $16,000 was a Series 1896 $5 Silver Certificate, Fr. 268, in PMG Gem Unc 66 EPQ, Tillman/Morgan. "One of only three signature combinations for the type and the highest and perhaps most beautiful denomination in the Educational series&the paper quality is magnificent and to the unknowing, would certainly pass as a recently printed note" and among the finest known for the type.

Also bringing $16,000 was an 1875 $2 The LaCrosse National Bank, Wis., charter 2344, Fr. 391, in PMG Choice Unc 64 EPQ. "A well known hoard Lazy Deuce with fully original paper that shows myriad fibers that give texture to the paper."

Hammered at $12,000 was an 1886 $5 Silver Certificate, Fr. 263, Rosecrans/Huston, in PMG Choice Unc 64 EPQ. "A rare and immensely popular note in Choice Uncirculated condition with a large brown seal on the front and a stunning engraving of five Morgan dollars on the back."

Selling at $5,500 was an 1862 $1 Legal Tender Note, Chittenden/Spinner, Fr. 16., graded PCGS Gem New 66 PPQ. "Gems of this, the Nation's first $1 bill, are elusive and are always in demand."
