Design Changes in Store for Dollars and Cents
 | By Maggie Pahl, Market Update September 22, 2008 |

After much attention and debate, the "In God We Trust" motto is making its home on the obverse of Presidential dollars in 2009.
The motto was originally placed on the edge of the $1 coins along with the date, mintmark and "E Pluribus Unum." Claims were made that "In God We Trust" was missing from some edge inscriptions, and the coins were termed "Godless dollars." The Congress-passed law mandating the motto be moved to the obverse was not finalized in time to dictate design of 2008 coins.
The relocated motto will debut in 2009 on the William Henry Harrison Presidential dollar. The Mint says the redesigned edge lettering will display three stars between "E Pluribus Unum" and the mintmark, and 10 stars between the date and "E Pluribus Unum."
The edge lettering will be the same on the 2009 Native American $1 coin.
Changes are also in the works for the cent design in 2009. The Mint will put into circulation a series of four different cent coins in recognition of the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth and the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln cent.
The reverse designs will represent a different phase in Lincoln's life: his birth in Kentucky, his formative years in Indiana, his professional life in Illinois and his presidency in Washington, D.C. The obverse will maintain the current design.
The first redesigned cent will be issued on the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth, Feb. 12. The remaining redesigned cents will be released at intervals throughout 2009.
