'God' Motto Relocated on 2009 $1s

If the Presidential dollars fail, it will not be because nobody is talking about them.

The latest information coming from the Mint introduces the new 2009 obverse design template that includes the national motto, "In God We Trust."

Originally, the Presidential dollar coins were designed to put the motto along with the date, mintmark and "E Pluribus Unum" on the edge.

After the uproar in 2007 when the Washington dollar made its appearance, some claimed the coins didn't have the motto on them at all, earning them a label in the popular media of "Godless dollars."

Congress passed a law mandating the relocation of the motto to the obverse. Congressional action did not occur in time to affect 2008-dated dollar coins.

The first 2009 coin to bear the relocated motto will honor President William Henry Harrison, who died shortly after his 1841 inauguration.

This will change the edge inscriptions.

The Mint says where there are single dots called delimiters between the inscriptions, on 2009 coins there will be three stars between "E Pluribus Unum" and the mintmark and 10 stars between the date and "E Pluribus Unum."

This edge lettering will be the same on the 2009 Native American $1 coin, which uses the Sacagawea obverse design with changing reverse designs.

AS A FULL TIME DEALER I EXPECT TO HAVE THOUSANDS OF CALLS FROM THE PUBLIC TELLING ME THAT THEY HAVE A MAJOR ERROR ON THE SAC DOLLARS, THAT THE COIN IS MISSING THE DATE WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSE TO BE! THIS WILL BE VERY TIME COMSUMMING TO HAVE TO TELL THEM IT'S ON THE EDGE AND NOT A MISTAKE! WHY WASN'T THE DATE LEFT ALONE??

I believe the mint officials have lost their minds. There should be nothing on the edge of our dollar coins. The fact that they can't produce one of those coins without errors being found should tell them that it's beyond their capability. Perhaps it's all intentional on their part. Errors are a way of being attention to their products. For collectors it becomes very expensive. I've had to give up on collecting the Prsidential dollars in MS state because I can't afford the errors necessary to put together a complete set. And don't get me started on the Position A and Position B thing. Now they are talking state parks on the quarters, civil rights heros, solar system commemorative dollars, etc. I'm afraid that coin collecting has gotten too expensive for me and even though I do enjoy it it's just something I just can't aford any more....Thank you United States Mint! I guess you folks are really in it to make money (I mean profits).

No one is forcing you to collect all the varieties.  I, too, think it's a little crazy that in the first three years of the Prez dollars, there will be at least 3 major design changes.

However, my Prez dollar album looks just as pretty filled with P,D,S coins and no errors.  Bottom line, if you like the coins, collect them, varieties or not.

Does anyone use the dollar coins?

They look great and I use them everywhere with the help of a little change-holder called Portsou that I picked up online.

Check it out www.portsou.com
