Fey Lists Smart Morgan Variety Buys

Michael S. Fey of Rare Coin Investments and co-author of the book Top 100 Morgan Dollar Varieties, has disclosed his picks for the best variety buys for the future in the Summer 2008 issue of the Top 100 Insights newsletter.
Fey targets what he calls key varieties and premium quality coins at "critical grades," the grade at which there has been a dramatic increase in price for the next grade higher.
Among Fey's picks are the 1878 "8 Tail Feather" VAM 9 "First Morgan" in Mint State, the 1878 8TF VAM 14.11 "Wild Eye Spikes" in AU or better, the 1878 7/3 TF VAM 44 "Tripled Blossoms & Leaves" in AU and better, and the 1878-S B1 reverse (long arrow shaft) in Mint State.
According to Fey, of the 429 trades recorded during the past quarter, new record prices were established for Leroy Van Allen's ANACS 64 DMPL 1878 8TF VAM 9 at $19,950 at a Heritage auction, a PCGS 55 1878 8TF VAM 14.11 "Wild Eye Spikes" for $17,250 on eBay, a PCGS 62 1887 VAM 1A "Donkey Tail" for $20,000 in a private trade, and a PCGS 62 1888-O VAM 1B "Scarface" for $9,500 in a private trade.
