July 23, 2008
Robert R. Van Ryzin has been named editor of Bank Note Reporter. A long-time collector, Van Ryzin joined Krause Publications in 1986 after receiving a master of fine arts (history) degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Having initially joined the staff of World Coin News, a BNR sister publication, in 1988 he moved to the Numismatic News editorial staff, becoming managing editor of that sister publication in 1992. In 1994 he became editor of Coins and Coin Prices magazines, positions with these BNR sister publications he continues to hold today.
Van Ryzin began collecting coins and paper money in 1976 and has an extensive history at the club level, including having served as a board member, vice president and president of the Numismatists of Wisconsin. He is a current board member of that organization. He is also a past president of a number of local clubs.
A former vice president of the Society for U.S. Commemorative Coins, Van Ryzin has also held a number of terms on the Numismatic Literary Guild's board of directors and is currently completing a four-year stint.
In 1995 Van Ryzin received the Glenn B. Smedley Memorial Award from the American Numismatic Association. Four years later he received the Presidential Award from the same organization.
A researcher and writer in the field, Van Ryzin has written three hobby books, all published by Krause Publications, including Striking Impressions: A Visual Guide to Collecting U.S. Coins (1992); Twisted Tails: Sifted Fact, Fantasy and Fiction from U.S. Coin History (1995); and Crime of 1873: The Comstock Connection (2001). The last of these received the Best Specialized Book on United States Coins award from the NLG in 2001. He's also receive numerous NLG awards for his writings in Numismatic News, Coins and Bank Note Reporter, including two awards for articles on paper money and three NLG Best All-Around Portfolio awards.
"Being a huge fan of history and particularly the history behind numismatic collectibles, I've always admired Bank Note Reporter for its in-depth coverage of this field," Van Ryzin said. "The paper money arena offers so many opportunities to make new discoveries and learn more about U.S. and world history and to expand one's hobby horizons. I look forward to getting to know more about the collectors and their passions in this area of numismatics through this appointment and by meeting paper money enthusiasts at future shows."
"We are pleased to have someone of Bob's stature in the numismatic world at the helm of Bank Note Reporter," said Debbie Bradley, Krause Publications numismatic editorial director. "Bob brings with him an award-winning legacy as both a numismatic writer and editor."
"Dave Harper will continue his association with Bank Note Reporter as a contributor," Bradley said. "As editor of Numismatic News and executive editor of World Coin News, Dave will become increasingly involved in our numismatic online development, including NumisMaster and Coin Chat Radio."
Van Ryzin succeeds David Kranz, who left Krause Publications in mid-June to pursue other interests.
