Coin of the Year: 25th Awards Presentation
 | By Scott Tappa February 02, 2008 | World Coin News presented its 25th Coin of the Year Awards on Saturday, February 2, in Berlin, Germany. Set at the World Money Fair, awards were presented in 10 categories, plus and overall winner and People's Choice Award.
Winners were:
Most historically significant coin: United States
Most innovative coinage concept: Canada
Most inspirational coin: Canada, Finland
Best crown: France
Most artistic: Denmark
Best contemporary event coin: Latvia
Most popular coin: United States
Best gold coin: Austria
Best silver coin: Japan
Best trade coin: United States
Coin of the Year: Canada
People's Choice: Hungary

A crowd of about 75 people attended the ceremony.

World Coin News editor Dave Harper was master of ceremonies.

U.S. Mint director Edmund C. Moy accepts the award for Most Historically Significant coin.

Royal Canadian Mint president Ian Bennett accepts the award for Most Innovative Coinage Concept.

Raimo Makkonen accepts the Most Inspirational Coin award for Finland.

Bennett accepts the shared award for Most Inspirational Coin.

Christophe Beaux of Monnaie de Paris accepts the award for Best Crown.

Harper addresses the crowd.

Torben Nielsen and Hans Denkov of the Royal Mint of Denmark accept the award for Most Artistic Coin.

Maruta Brukle of Latvia accepts the the award for Best Contemporary Event Coin.

Moy accepts the award for Most Popular Coin.

Dietmar Spranz and Helmut Andexlinger of the Austrian Mint took home honors for Best Gold Coin.

The Japan Mint won Best Silver Coin honors. Kazuo Nitta of the Japan Mint accepts the award.

Moy accepts the award for Best Trade Coin.

Bennett and Canada claimed Coin of the Year honors.


Thanks to a massive online voter turnout, Hungary won the inaugural People's Choice Award. Terez Horvath and Ferenc Gaal of the Hungarian Mint.

A sizeable media contingent, including a television station from Latvia and magazine from Italy, covered the event.
