Monnaie de Paris to Release 100th Tour de France Set
By Lisa Bellavin
August 06, 2013

Monnaie de Paris celebrated the 100th running of one of the largest sporting competition in the world, The Tour de France, with a special set of coins.

The Tour is a multi stage bike race held in France and its neighboring countries. It is broadcasted on more than 100 television channels in more than 190 countries. 22 teams of nine riders each compete over varied grueling terrain and cover some 3,200 kilometers over the course of three weeks. The race was first organized in 1903 to increase sales for the French magazine L'Auto, and is currently run by the Amaury Sport Organization. It has been held yearly since its inception except for two temporary stoppages for World War I and World War II.

This year’s race was held June 29 through July 21, 2013, and began in Corsica, the only region of Metropolitan France that it had not yet visited.

The 100th race set is comprised of eight coins - four gold coins of different face values honoring the event itself, and four silver 10-euro coins devoted to the famous Tour de France jerseys. The yellow jersey denotes the tour leader, the red spotted jersey signals the leading climber, the green jersey is worn by the point leader and the white jersey indicates the best young cyclist.

The obverse of the gold coins depicts two competitors in mid-race. The left hand side symbolizes the winner of the inaugural 1903 race, while on the right a contemporary racing cyclist competes. The two figures share a common wheel, suggesting the link between the two eras.

The obverse of the 4 silver coins shows a stylized cyclist in each of the colored jerseys. Each coin shows the rider in a situation that represents the category of his jersey.

The reverse is common to each coin in this series and features the Tour de France logo with the inscription "100e édition". Corsica and the Arc de Triomphe represent the starting line and the finish line of the 2013 race.
