Memorial Coin Issued for Prince Roy, Founder of Sealand
By Lisa Bellavin
August 05, 2013

The Treasury of the Principality of Sealand has launched a commemorative memorial coin paying tribute to its founder and first Sovereign, Prince Roy, who died on October 9, 2012 at the age of 91.

In 1967, Prince Roy claimed a World War II-era decommissioned platform & defense tower located in International waters 6 miles off the southeast coast of the UK. The platform was declared sovereign territory by Roy who also proclaimed himself and his wife, Joan Bates as joint sovereign rulers on September 2 - his wife’s birthday.

Prince Roy is succeeded by his only son, the Prince Regent – now Sovereign Prince Michael.

The proof quality coin is the first official coin authorized by the Principality’s treasury since 1977. It is struck at a private mint facility in Birmingham and designed by Michael Alexander. The obverse includes a detailed portrait of Prince Roy inspired by a photograph taken by Mr. Alexander on the occasion of the Principality’s 35th anniversary of independence. His initials “MAA” are placed to the lower right of the portrait. The legend included around the portrait reads “ROY PRINCE OF SEALAND 1967 - 2012 E MARE LIBERTAS” (from the Sea freedom), the Principality’s official motto. A small crest is placed just below the portrait.

The reverse depicts the national coat of arms along with text above the crest which reads “PRINCIPALITY OF SEALAND” and the coin’s denomination “25 DOLLARS”. The text below the crest reads “IN MEMORIUM 1921 – 2012”. The initials of the designer “MAA” are placed beside the crest to the right. Each sterling silver coin is made of 28 grams of .925 silver, at a size of 38.6mm. Each piece is individually numbered using laser technology and carries a hallmark on a smooth portion of the coin’s reeded edge. A mintage not exceeding 300 examples has been authorized. The cost will be approximately $77.00 USD.

The Treasury is handling the sale of this memorial coin directly to interested collectors. A gold version ($250 face value) is also planned and will be made available to interested collectors on a reserve-only basis, which will reflect its final mintage.
