Maybe it’s the newly enhanced stripes on Miss Liberty’s skirt. Collectors are clearly infatuated.
Demand for the two-coin West Point silver American Eagle set overwhelmed the U.S. Mint website for a time when it went on sale May 9.
Orders for 88,000 sets were registered in the first two and a half hours it was on sale.
“Our online catalog has not stopped working. However, because of the large number of customers attempting to place orders for the American Eagle West Point Two-Coin Silver Set, you may experience delays,” the Mint said in a statement. “This product will be on sale through June 6 and there is no mintage limit, so try later when the site is not experiencing so much traffic. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.”
By 7:05 a.m. Eastern time May 10, orders stood at 140,648. For comparison, the first day of sales for last year’s two-coin San Francisco Eagle set was 85,341.

As of the afternoon of May 15, the West Point set total stood at 191,726. To aid collectors in following this offer, a running tally appears on the Mint’s web page.
The two-coin set features a proof 2013-W Eagle and a new enhanced uncirculated 2013-W Eagle. It is priced at $139.95. Orders are being accepted until June 6. Mintage will be determined by the number of coins ordered by the cutoff date.
That final mintage number looks like it will exceed the 2012-S set figure of 224,981.
The only question now is by how many.
