Heritage is donating all proceeds, including the sale price and the buyer’s premium from the bill, in addition to producing a limited edition poster featuring the rare note. The collectible poster will be available for $25 each with all of the proceeds donated to the effort.

“This note is symbolic of the hardworking people of West, Texas,” said Dustin Johnston, Director of Currency Auctions for Heritage. “We know the town will pull through this and we know bank note collectors will recognize this as a great way to promote donations that go directly to the victims’ families.”

By the 1890s, businesses were abundant in West, named after land owner, Thomas West. Starting in 1865, banks could place bonds and other securities on deposit with the US Treasury and receive notes bearing their name to circulate in their area. They were known as National Banks and West had three of these banks between 1900 and 1934, each of which issued notes bearing the name West.

Established in 1894 as the West Hose Company #1, the West Volunteer Fire Department relies on all-volunteer firefighters and is a fire department whose fundraising efforts helped build the current firehouse.
