Ascension Coin Bears New Coat of Arms|
April 15, 2013
Ascension Island’s new coat of arms is featured on a coin issued by Pobjoy Mint on its behalf.
In August 2012 Queen Elizabeth II approved the new coat of arms, the design of which was drawn up by the College of Arms in London. Prior to this approval, Ascension Island used the U.K.’s coat of arms for official purposes.
Ascension Island is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
There is no indigenous or permanent population on the island, but around 880 people live there.
When considering the new design for the coat of arms, the islanders themselves were asked what they would like to see included. The design, which includes the turtles that famously lay their eggs on Ascension’s beaches, was based on the features suggested by the people.
Available in cupronickel and proof sterling silver, the obverse features Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of the Queen.
