The Royal Australian Mint celebrated the royal nuptials of Prince William and Catherine Middleton with two significant royal coin events.
As noted in World Coin News’ May issue, the RAM adhered to ancient tradition. It delayed release of its coins showing the happy couple until Catherine had married her prince and was no longer a commoner.
And so, on April 29 itself, mint staff were on hand at Sydney’s Customs House where the royal wedding was being shown live on a giant screen. Once he and she had both said, “I do,” members of the public were invited to exchange regular circulation 20 cents for the new wedding 20 cents. Despite inclement weather, Sydneysiders participated in number.
The following day, the mint formally launched the Royal Wedding 50 cents at the mint’s Canberra premises. Despite a chilly morn, impatient collectors started lining up from 7 a.m. By 10 a.m., the line extended well into the carpark and included many younger fans.
