Tents In, Old Car Show Almost Here
July 02, 2009

It doesn't pass for a flag raising at Iwo Jima, but when the tent poles go up in the parking lot at Krause Publications, as they have this week, I know it is time for the annual Old Car Show, which starts July 11.

It's a little bit like the circus coming to town. There are 1,300 of us versus 140,000 visitors.

I've already got my assignments, both from the company and from the local Lions club.

It is a big event and it has a big impact on life here. It is hard to believe that everything used to be set up and taken down in the span of a single day, a Sunday, but that is the event as it stood in 1978 when I saw my first one.

I should correct that. The swap meet vendors got to set up on Saturday for that first car show that I experienced.

Where we have tens of thousands of people now, we had hundreds and thousands of people then.

Growth is something awesome to behold.

I feel lucky to have seen it, though right now I feel even luckier to have a three-day Fourth of July weekend beforehand.

See you back here bright and early Monday, July 6.
