Waiting for Lightning to Strike
March 01, 2011

Do you think you will be successful when the Mint puts its 27,000 numismatic version of the 2010 America the Beautiful 5-ounce coin sets on sale?

I expect I won’t be.

I don’t intend to order one.

It is expensive. The bullion version has caused no end of problems among hobbyists and many feel cheated.

There were 33,000 of the bullion sets. They are still not all delivered. Some are likely to be not even be sold yet by the Authorized Purchasers.

Since the numismatic version has a lower mintage, I expect there will be quite a clamor for them.

Everybody will be watching the Mint for the least little misstep. That’s a given.

But when the time comes to actually attempt to place an order, I will be absent.

I don’t want to be frustrated, and most of all, I know I will not be buying two sets a year, bullion and numismatic, until 2021.

For me, it is better not to start.

I was thinking the same thing - plus - I expect silver to get too expensive to buy as the years go by. I started the Australian Lunar set in silver (1998, I think)- and bought my personal sets, and some for friends (birthday & Christmas gifts) at about $16 apiece. When the first series ended, we started the second series for our friends too - but now those same 1 oz coins are running closer to $50......the 2nd series is only 1/3rd completed! We had to stop - as it is - we could give our friends a bottle of Bailey's for a third the price!!! How long before we find ourselves giving out $100 or $200 ounces of silver just to complete the sets?? It was sad that we had to halt those sets - but on the other hand - what a lovely run up in silver!

You are spot-on!!!!
I wasn't even considering buying that 5ozer! 1 oz with the Mint's markup is one thing.........
