What's Your Sushi Moment?
February 03, 2011

Coin collecting has a hold on me that I can’t define precisely. I am sure most collectors feel the same way.

That I must be a coin collector is a given. Precisely what I collect can change.

When I was a kid, I went through the various denominations in circulation and filled up my Whitman albums, or at least attempted to. For much of that time I was working on multiple sets at once.

That was a common experience for many of my generation of hobbyists.

I have tried esoteric things like Boggs bills – the artwork created mostly in the 1990s by artist J.S.G. Boggs. It was different. It was interesting. Then it seems like I hit a brick wall and I probably haven’t given these notes more than five minutes’ worth of attention in the last 10 years.

The artist’s life went into a downward spiral to prison for matters not related to his art. What he is doing now I don’t know.

Collectors have so many possible choices that they might be overwhelmed and then do nothing. That would be a shame.

If you try something, it might turn out to be a wrong choice, but the beauty of collecting is you learn from it and try something else.

I was reminded of this when I was in Berlin. There was so much to see and not enough time to see it all. I certainly tried.

On the way to dinner one night I was asked what I liked. I said I would eat anything but sushi.

I ended up eating kangaroo at an Australian restaurant, which is an interesting outcome in Germany.

I had never eaten it before and I have to say it was quite good.

As for sushi, I have been challenged to try it, so I promised I would when the opportunity arose at a future coin show.

Will I like it?

I don’t know, but if I do not, as with coins, I will try something else. I will always be eating something.
